Global Heat band stirs up a fresh mix of Soul/R&B music that has been called “Truly remarkable and wonderful” [Joyce Taylor, NBC News, Seattle] and “High-caliber” [Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, Reno]. The workshop or short performance includes demos and discussion of the music of Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, and James Brown; the Motown sound of Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder; R&B like Earth Wind and Fire; and contemporary artists like Lizzo, Anderson Paak, and Kendrick Lamar. INTERSECTIONS of Soul, Jazz & Hip-Hop: Social Impacts across the World. This program explores the emergence and influence of these diverse musical genres as a conduit for cross-cultural dialogue.

Matt Butler is a songwriter, poet and storyteller. His solo show Reckless Son tells the story of how his concert at the Albany County Jail led to over 100 performances in jails and prisons across the country. He’s been featured on NPR Morning Edition, The Blue Grass Situation, and PBS with SPIN saying “Butler is doing something special for the American arts'' after adding him to their albums and artists of the year lists. He’s performed at events held by The David Lynch Foundation, The Columbia Center For Justice, American Folk Art Museum, National Alliance On Mental Illness (NAMI), The Caron Foundation and was an inaugural ‘Activist In Residence’ at the Kripalu Center in the Berkshires and Artist In Residence at HB Studio in Manhattan. Along with correctional facilities, he speaks and performs at performing arts centers, universities, high schools, and retreat centers. Reckless Son, the nationally acclaimed solo show written and performed by singer-songwriter Matt Butler, was inspired by his journey performing over 100 concerts in jails and prisons across the country. As heard on NPR Morning Edition and featured in SPIN’s Album of the Year list, Reckless Son sheds light on the stories of people who have experienced incarceration. Through a powerful combination of spoken word and song, the performance turns a compassionate eye to their lives before, during and after their time behind prison walls and evokes empathy and understanding for those who are all too often considered out of sight and out of mind. It’s a story of hope, forgiveness, and what it means to discover a deeper sense of purpose through service to others. Reckless Son was developed in part by the HB Studio Artist Residency program and was workshopped in Oregon State Penitentiary, The Theater Workshop at Otisville State Prison, and the Chesterfield County Jail. For additional impact, performances of Reckless Son can be accompanied by visits to correctional facilities, hospitals, treatment centers and schools. It’s the jitterbug meets dub step, it’s flappers on Facebook. “It’s Cab Calloway meets Daft Punk,” explains Good Co bandleader Carey Rayburn. Good Co is the US’s first live Electro Swing Band, a genre mixing the music of the swing era with the dance music of today. Like baseball, mom, and apple pie, Jazz is about as American as it gets. But for years jazz has faded from the mainstream, and is now often thought of as an eclectic or intellectual type of music. Of course this was not always the case. When jazz was first invented it was the music of the clubs, it was for dancing, it was for boozing, it was forbreaking away from the constraints and formalities of the time. What’s a good speakeasy without some wild jazz music to go along with all that gin? Electro Swing takes these sounds, embedded in the American identity, and brings them into the 21st century. Its Roaring 20s meets 2020s as swinging samples are mixed with electronic beats and modern production techniques. For Seattle six piece Good Co, the Jazz came first and the Electro followed after. “All of the band members are musicians who studied performance at college, our background is pretty traditional” explained Rayburn. But that all changed when a friend introduced him to the Electro Swing sounds that were percolating in Europe. “I’d always been a big fan of early jazz, and I had just starting really getting into Electronica, so it was a perfect fit!” Rayburn quickly started writing Electro Swing music of his own and formed the band Good Co. He was surprised to find there were no other bands performing the genre in the US. “It was taking off in Europe but I was shocked to find there were no groups back here. It seemed crazy to me, I mean, the US invented Jazz!” Since forming the band in 2012 Good Co has been called “pure entertainment” and “a bit addictive” by reviewers. The group has played throughout the the country in an effort to, according to Rayburn, “spread the sound of Electro Swing, and, most importantly, show people a good time. I mean, that’s the whole point dance music, no matter the era!”

The Imaginaries is an Americana band formed in the open plains of Oklahoma. Consisting of husband & wife duo Shane Henry (guitar, vocals) & Maggie McClure (piano, vocals), their debut album was released March 26, 2021. It was recorded in famed Muscle Shoals, AL with legendary “Swampers” & serves as both an introduction to The Imaginaries and the beginning of their journey as a band after both singer songwriters have enjoyed their own successes as solo artists. Quarteto Nuevo merges western classical, eastern European folk, Latin and jazz with an organic feel that packs a wallop! Winners of two South Arts Jazz Road Tours grants as well as a $40,000 Creative Residency Grant, the ensemble has composed new movements for its Jazz Road Suite celebrating each state they visit! Colorado, Wyoming and Utah were featured in 2020. In Fall 2021 the group added Montana to the suite while touring in four Big Sky communities! This season they visited Alaska (one of the many tours that came about from their stunning ANW Juried Showcase performance in 2022), Oregon, California, Nevada, and Arizona and will record the Nine Movement Jazz Road Suite in a booking at ASU's Kerr Cultural Center. Their diverse programs can be tailored to fit anywhere, from an intimate chamber music venue to a large outdoor festival. After years of intensive recording projects and concerts for jazz aficionados throughout the U.S., four San Diego-based musicians came together with a purpose: explore the art of song in their own unique way! Renowned jazz, blues and gospel singer Leonard Patton teamed up with the critically acclaimed Danny Green Trio to form LP And The Vinyl. The bandâ€™s wide array of influences includes everything from jazz, R&B, and rock, to 80â€™s and 90â€™s hits, Brazilian music, and classical music. Blending these sounds together, LP And The Vinyl has created a highly unique and personal approach to music-making that leaves its audiences energized and craving more. The groupâ€™s repertoire draws from three separate areas: beautifully reimagined renditions of favorite hits by artists including Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, and David Bowie, fresh and funky explorations of jazz standards, and their own original songs. The members of LP And The Vinyl are all devoted music educators. They offer a variety of lectures geared toward musicians and non-musicians, as well as clinics for jazz ensembles. They were selected for a week-long residency at Quad City Arts which took place in April, 2022. Lectures: Through a combination of performance and discussion, LP And The Vinyl takes the audience into the mind of a jazz musician - a behind the scenes look at the composing and creative process, improvisation, and interaction techniques, and the function of each instrument in the ensemble. Lectures also cover elements of jazz history, placing an emphasis on how music from cultures all around the world shaped and continue to shape jazz. Lectures are intended for both musicians and non- musicians, and can be customized for all age levels. Clinics: Clinics with LP And The Vinyl are intensive studies designed to nurture studentsâ€™ growth as musicians, both technically and creatively. Calle Sur is a combination of the multifaceted experiences of being Latin American, of coming from urban versus rural settings, of being of multiracial and multicultural origin, of mixing multi-gender perspectives. Ed East is Panamanian. His great-grandparents moved to Panama from Barbados, and his great-grandfather worked for the railroad during the construction of the Panama Canal. Karin Stein, his Colombian partner and the granddaughter of German immigrants, grew up with no electricity on a remote farm in the eastern plains of Colombia. Calle Sur is known for the breadth of its musical repertoire. Both musicians are immigrants to the United States who have undergone firsthand the process of adaptation to a new culture. They are veteran musicians and experienced educators who expertly perform a broad range of Latin music styles and offer a broad range of community engagement opportunities. Bowen Lyam Lee has been on the stage of regional and national storytelling events, conducts workshops for educators, and performs virtually with national, international, and regional programs. She has won numerous national story slams and been a National Storytelling Network Grand Slam winner. She is a Chautauqua scholar who has performed Asian women of history, including Anna May Wong and Bowen’s great grandmother, who was born and raised in the Chinese fishing village of Monterey. Bowen was a public school teacher for 35 years and taught k-12 and adult education, specializing in English language development, science and environmental education. She has retired from public school teaching, but continues to give workshops on storytelling in education. She is now a professional storyteller who specializes in historical, educational, and environmental storytelling.

I have done in person, virtual, and hybrid storytelling. Virtual live telling is either Zoom or Google Meet. Hybrid telling performed via Facebook Live or YouTube Live. I also provide recorded stories. I started out as an online storyteller during shelter in place, but my favorite performances are with live audiences.

Ballet Folklórico del Rio Grande (BFRG), under the direction of Miguel Peña, is an 18-member organization comprised of alumni of the internationally recognized collegiate folklórico program offered at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. UTRGV offers the only folklórico dance major in the United States and produces the wellspring of highly skilled professional dancers that comprise BFRG. The multi-award winning Miguel Peña is the only tenure track folklorico dance professor in the United States. If it is a fly-in date, backline may be required. This includes: a high-end drum kit (14" snare, 14" rack tom, 16" floor tom, 22" kick, 14" dark hi-hat, 16" dark crash, 20" dark ride), professional keyboard such as a Nord (or equivalent) with piano/organ sounds, a Vox AC30 or Fender Deluxe guitar amp, and a quality 200+ watt bass rig (Ampeg, Eden, Trace Elliot, or Traynor) .
