The show "Repères" highlights the reference points and core values that Bon Débarras has relied on for its creative process since its beginnings. Identity bearings, geographical markers, linguistic and cultural reference points – these are “repères” in French. For the showcase, Panamanian/Colombian duo Calle Sur will perform 4 songs from contrasting Latin American cultures, such as a traditional cowboy tune from the Venezuelan/Colombian savannas, an Afro-Costa Rican calypso, an Andean panpipe tune, and an original song. Calle Sur is known for the breadth of its musical repertoire. Both musicians are immigrants to the United States who have undergone firsthand the process of adaptation to a new culture. They are veteran musicians and experienced educators who expertly perform a broad range of Latin music styles including traditional and popular, jazz, and salsa, and offer a broad range of community engagement opportunities. In one scene (see our 'additional' video link) a father courageously leans into the awkwardness of a crucial discussion with his son about the importance of consent. The conversation is awkward and funny, posing the question: why are consent talks always for young girls and women? We want to shift the responsibility of stopping assault onto guys in friendship groups, fathers of sons. It hasn’t been this way before and it needs to be.
