North-South ConeXions

North-South ConeXions (ConeXiones Norte-Sur), founded by Rose Cano in 1994, is a cultural exchange program between artists of The Americas (North, Central, South and the Caribbean) to promote collaboration and to highlight similarities among our cultures. This international artist exchange project seeks to overcome the primarily English-Spanish language barrier dividing North and South using music, theater, and dance as a cultural bridge.  By organizing reciprocal international tours and residencies between artists in different countries and hemispheres, this project encourages mutual appreciation for the other’s culture, artistic collaboration in the future, and lifelong bonds. Since 1994, North-South ConeXions has brought over 45 artists to Washington State.

Programs and Partnerships:

The Native ConeXion:

North South ConeXions 1994 was first founded with the primary mission of fostering the exchange of ideas and art forms between native, indigenous artists of North and South America.  The project began simultaneously in Lima, Peru and Seattle, Washington as a Native-to-Native exchange between native singers, dancers and carvers of the Pacific Northwest and traditional Scissors Dancers and musicians of the Peruvian Andes.  Over the past 13 years North South ConeXions has organized eight international tours to school, universities, colleges, international arts festivals, reservations, Andean villages and communities, theaters and ceremonial sites. These “North-South Encounters” have  made headway on breaking down stereotypes about American “Indians” and “Latinos” both for visiting artists and audiences alike.

Peruvian Scissors Dancers available for block booking.  Fee negotiable.

The African ConeXion:

Dedicated to educating about the diversity within Latin America, in 2001 North-South ConeXions embarked on a new path:  The AFrican ConeXion Project.  Show the blending of  African and Spanish heritage in The Americas, The AFrican ConeXion Project seeks to unite Latino and African American communities through music, theater and dance.  Highlighting dance and music of  the Diaspora,  artists and audiences make the connection between Afro-Latino and African American roots, culture, and history.

In 2001 North-South ConeXions  teamed up with Rainier Valley Youth Theater to host a Cuba-U.S. theatrical collaboration, bringing four artists directly from Havana, Cuba to Seattle’s inner city to work with 20 neighborhood youth on an Afro Cuban musical. Latino and African American youth came together in a positive setting with local professional artists to collaborate with renowned Cuban artists on a new bilingual Afro-Cuban musical entitled Mabaire!  Don’t Forget Me!   We labeled this  first event The African ConeXion: Cuba Visits Rainier Valley.

Since 2005, North-South ConeXions has partnered with Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center of Seattle to co-produce The AFrican ConeXion Project events.  In 2007, The AFrican ConeXion Project hosted two artists from Teatro Del Milenio of Peru, Luis Sandoval and Roberto Arguedas to create a new musical, Callejon (The Alley).  Together with local gospel composer Paul Thomas, and 12 youth dancers, an original bilingual musical was born based on Afro-Peruvian music and dance.
