Artbeat

Artbeat is a not-for-profit company dedicated to presenting the finest events – especially to communities off-the-beaten-track.

Artbeat’s management has presented over 700 performances in the west and has extensive experience presenting in underserved communities. Artbeat’s most successful tours have featured Musical Theater – the Tony Award winning shows: Ain’t Misbehavin,’ and Sophisticated Ladies and A Closer Walk With Patsy Cline. Artbeat has also toured Shirley Valentine, starring Helen Reddy, Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet, native American flautist, R. Carlos Nakai, Jury’s Irish Cabaret and pianist George Winston.

Artbeat's president, David Shaw, developed the Peter Britt Festival into the summer long program it is today; was the first executive director of the Everett Performing Arts Center; and served as vice president of Cornish College of Allied Arts during its accreditation process.

While Artbeat usually presents its events independently by developing cooperative arrangements with theaters, it is now also making its roster of shows available to established presenters.

Artbeat events tour with minimal technical requirements but maximum talent on stage.  Stay up-to-date on the latest Artbeat information by visiting our website at

FIVE GUYS NAMED MOE is the hot Louis Jordan review that's more like a swinging party than a show! In their multi-colored zoot suits the five Moes harmonize, croon, wail, tap and jive their way through 27 Louis Jordan hits. Among them are: Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby; Saturday Night Fish Fry; Caldonia; Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying; Choo Choo Choo Boogie and the irresistible, audience participation  Push Ka Pe She Pi Rhumba Line. With more than fifty top ten singles on the rhythm and blues charts, this great composer and saxophonist brought a popular new slant to jazz that paved the way for the rock-and-roll of the 1950s.

FIVE GUYS NAMED MOE includes lots of infectious audience participation. The audience finds it impossible to resist joining in the raucous Push Ka Pe She Pi Rhumba line or throwing up their hands and shouting "MOP!" when egged on by the comic Moes who seem like cartoon characters come to life. Big Moe, Little Moe, Eat Moe, Four-Eyed Moe and No Moe provide the sparks for this explosion of merriment.

Louis Jordan was the alto sax player and band leader who got the white folks to stand up and boogie. He successfully mainstreamed traditionally African American music in the 1940' s. His music, along with other staples of that era are the linchpin of FIVE GUYS NAMED MOE.
An international sensation, the simple production design (a small band, unit set and a handful of broad, charmingly extroverted performers) belies an exhilarating, all-embracing theatrical experience, complete with some uproarious audience participation that’ll have spectators leaping out of their seats to join the celebration! The original production opened on Broadway April 8, 1992 and played 445 performances.
Click here for information about the Broadway production.

Ain’t Misbehavin’ – the Broadway smash hit, Tony Award-winning, Fats Waller Musical - Direct from New York - featuring Vivian Jett from the original Broadway production. It’s a journey through the Fats Waller Songbook and Harlem in its heyday. With snazzy period costumes, complete with bowlers, spats, ermine, and pearls, the dynamic five member cast transforms the theater into a Harlem jazz hall!
Sophisticated Ladies – is an homage to Ellington, his music, the Harlem Renaissance, art deco and high society. The audience will feel like that are taking trip back in time to New York jazz clubs: the Savoy Ballroom, the Cotton Club ... places Ellington's band brought his unique music. Infused with hot tap dance numbers and a swanky, 1940s attitude that demonstrates Ellington’s music still really "swings" today. Use our band or hook up with your local jazz band for a spectacular co-production!
La Curandera – Cinnabar Theater tours the west coast premiere of Robert Rodriguez’ re-envisioning of Mozart’s comic opera, Bastien und Bastienne in a Mexican setting with a sorceress, La Curandera, untangling a lover’s misunderstanding. The 60-minute work is ideal for youth Junior High and adult audiences and features a libretto of mixed English and Spanish.
When God Winked – Written and performed by Ron Jones with video clip projections. Enlightenment strikes Ron Jones at the most unexpected time and place—a rec center for the handicapped. With poignancy and grace, When God Winked delivers an insider’s look at the current terrain for the disabled and the disenfranchised. His book about Mt. Zion’s psychiatric ward, “Kids Called Crazy,” was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. A one-man show for your black-box series or community foundation benefit.
Your Arms Too Short to Box With God is a joyous free spirited celebration of gospel music. A critically acclaimed two-act musical based on the Gospel of St. Matthew, Your Arms Too Short to Box with God features music and lyrics by Vinnette Carroll, Alex Bradford, and Micki Grant. Framed by a church service, the play traces scriptural events from the day Jesus Christ arrives in Jerusalem to the Resurrection through sermon, dance and sweet gospel music. A perfect show for families and church groups. The good vibrations can be felt throughout the theatre. A Joyous, Free-Spirited Celebration of Gospel Music.
Commissioned by the Italian government and directed by Carroll, the play was first performed in Spoleto, Italy, at the Festival of Two Worlds in 1975. It was later featured at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C., on Broadway, and in a six-month tour that, due to its popularity, was extended to nearly a year and a half.

Fred Curchack
has created over seventy original theatre pieces (ensemble works and twenty-three solos). His performances have been featured at dozens of international theatre festivals. He has received the Gold Medal at the International Festival of Solo Theatre, the American Theatre Wing Award Critics’ Awards in L.A., S.F., Dallas, Austin, and his work has been in the “Top Ten” of The Dallas Morning News and The New York Times.

Gauguin's Shadow
Fred Curchack's multimedia portrait of French painter Paul Gauguin, the well-heeled stockbroker turned bohemian and Western civilization dropout ("All I ever wanted was to dare everything").

Stuff As Dreams Are Made On
"...what Curchack is up to in Stuff As Dreams Are Made On is essentially unlike any other solo show. It is, first of all, an ambitious adaptation of The Tempest. Marshaling his formidable training in cross-cultural performance techniques (Noh theatre, Indian Kathakali, Balinese Topeng, African dance, Growtowski's Polish Theatre Lab), Curchack gives himself the challenge of matching the inexpressible beauty of Shakespeare's verse with non-verbal theatrical gestures - and he succeeds impressively…
More than a deconstruction of Shakespeare ... Fred Curchack reminds us of the power of live theater with the fiery magnetism of his images, whose resonance is deep within us." ---Don Shewey, Prelude, Portland, Maine
