It’s Entertaining!I Hear America Singing” presents highly engaging concerts of original art songs written by acclaimed Northwest composer David Paul Mesler and performed by the lustrous mezzo soprano Barbara Hume.

It’s Invigorating!  With David as your virtuosic composer/pianist and playful master of ceremonies, and Barbara as your versatile and theatrical songstress, thrill to an evening of new art songs that explore the masculine swagger and rugged individualism of Walt Whitman; the deep, penetrating insights of Emily Dickinson; the gothic brooding and macabre wit of Edgar Allen Poe; the syntactic innovations as well as euphoric romanticism of e.e. cummings; the gargoyle smiles of Carl Sandburg; the gentle pastorals and philosophizing of Robert Frost; and the gospel, blues and stomps of Langston Hughes.

It’s Fun! Family concerts are equally colorful and include brisk animal portraits with texts by Ogden Nash and Theodore Roethke; the whimsical Rootabaga Stories of Carl Sandburg; and the inimitable musings and cracked fables of James Thurber.

It’s Educational! Concerts can represent a potpourri of poets and themes, or they can concentrate on a single poets’ work. Composition master classes and songwriting workshops are also available, and are frequently done as pre-concert activities.

IT’S “I HEAR AMERICA SINGING!”
